Four individuals have developed sepsis following dining experiences at a high-class Stockholm restaurant connected to a potential bacterial contamination incident.
Health authorities report that at least 15 individuals have been hospitalized or are under observation in hospitals after visiting the restaurant located in Östermalm.
The majority of the dozens affected are not seriously ill, according to local health authorities, and so far none admitted to hospital have needed critical care treatment.
This represents a rare occurrence for products tainted with Listeria bacteria to trigger serious infection, known as Listeria infection. Individuals with listeriosis can develop sepsis - a life-threatening overreaction by the immune system.
Local health officials verified that infection tracing, originally focusing on patrons who ate at the restaurant between 25 and 27 September, has now been expanded to include people who visited from September 23rd-24th.
"Those with persistent signs such as elevated temperature, nausea or diarrhoea are advised to seek care at a hospital emergency room for assessment," stated an infectious disease physician.
Regional health officials cautioned in a press release that "numerous individuals may have been exposed" and emphasized that listeria presented the greatest risk to expectant mothers, senior citizens and those with weakened immune systems.
Sources confirm that eighty individuals have registered food poisoning following meals at the venue using a municipal reporting system between last Saturday and Thursday morning.
Approximately 400 individuals have been notified for exposure tracking.
Four people had been diagnosed with systemic infection but no cases had required intensive care, according to health officials.
The restaurant has suspended operations while an investigation into the origin of the potential contamination proceeds.
The establishment announced in a statement that it had consistently met food safety inspections and was co-operating with regulatory bodies.
"This situation is treated with utmost gravity and as the well-being of our customers is our primary concern, we have voluntarily closed until further notice," the proprietors declared, adding that they hoped to reopen on October 7th.
The chef and co-owner offered sincere apologies: "The only thing I can do is sincerely apologise, because I suffer with these individuals."
Listeria is typically present in earth, aquatic environments and animals, and can spread through contaminated food, particularly when stored in refrigerated environments for long periods.
While most people experience only minor effects similar to gastroenteritis, it can progress to serious conditions such as brain inflammation or sepsis. The development timeline can range from a few days to three weeks.
