A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, such a setup requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
